Behind the Beak

Jacob Osterhout -- a reporter from the Daily News -- was interested in our recent "Sandy Search," and decided to see what it would be like to get into character (and into costume) as Brooklyn's favorite bird.

He'll be here later on this afternoon for a "try-out" so we'll see how he fares. I can tell you from experience...it ain't as easy as it looks!

Check back later for more updates.

UPDATE: Jacob (as Sandy) surprised a group of kids from P.S. 86 in Bushwick, throwing them some t-shirts and challenging them to some races around the bases. Stay tuned to the Daily News for an upcoming story on the details of what it was like to go behind the beak...hopefully in the next week or so!

The role of Sandy is a very difficult role to fill

I can't believe the Cyclones are so open about who is playing their mascot. Of course people know there's a person in there, but how about the kids. My kids love Sandy and Pee-wee. I don't want to know who is playing Sandy, because that defeats the purpose of a mascot. Does Peter Parker say to everyone, "I'm Spiderman" ? The Cyclones should take a pointer from their parent team the Mets who take high priority in hiding the performers who play Mr.Met. Is it really worth it for some publicity?

Actually, if you read Civil War, Peter Parker DID in fact tell everyone he was Spider-Man. He held a press conference and took his mask off. (talk about doing it for the publicity!) Granted, that started a whole chain of horrible events, culminating in the death of Captain America (who everyone knew was Steve Rogers)...but hopefully, our little mascot try-out won't produce the same disastrous results.
